Course summary and requirements
Cables/pipes are hazardous yet easy to catch by an untrained operative. When this happens, damage to wires is called a cable strike, often due to excavators, hand-held tools and digging equipment. Operators must switch power off when cable strikes happen and evacuate the site to assess the damage and risk. But this scenario can be avoided using cable/pipes avoidance tools that identify the location of buried cables and pipes before excavation, reducing the risk of injury to personnel and damage to utilities.
This training is essential for workers to detect cables/pipes safely and correctly. Delegates will review legal requirements, ensure safety compliance, and understand procedures, appropriate documentation and classifications.
The course content includes:
• Basic principles in locating and avoiding underground services
• Identifying hazards and the risks they pose
• Reading and interpreting site plans
• Practical use of equipment including the CAT 4
Assessments
With a mix of practical and theory-based exercises, videos, and tutorials, delegates will cover manufacturer and general knowledge and awareness of utility services and participate in practical activities to learn best practices and operating methods to detect cables for excavation preparation.
At the end of the training, successful delegates will confidently:
- Identify potential risks to themselves and others
- Read and understand site plans for effective preparatory work
- Operate cable avoidance tools to avoid or locate underground apparatus
On successfully completing the course, delegates receive their Soft Sell Training accredited certificate, valid for three years. No formal entry requirements needed must be aged 16 years or over and have basic knowledge of electrical science.
